Ron Brown defends anti-gay stance

OMAHA, Neb. — Nebraska assistant coach Ron Brown says he’ll keep speaking out against homosexuality even if it costs him his job.

Brown said in an interview with The Associated Press that “to be fired for my faith would be a greater honor than to be fired because we didn’t win enough games.”

Coach Bo Pelini and athletic director Tom Osborne say Brown is a good coach and he is within his rights to express his personal views.

Brown earned national acclaim for leading a prayer at midfield before the Cornhuskers’ game at scandal-torn Penn State six months ago. He has been under fire recently for testifying against an
anti-discrimination ordinance in Omaha, Neb., that protects gay and transgender people.

My only question is.. WHAT THE HELL TOOK SO LONG!?!?

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is asking Congress for help in policing oil markets to be on the lookout for price manipulation by speculators. Obama says the country can’t have some speculators reap millions while consumers suffer from high gas prices.

The president wants six times more staff at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to supervise the market. He also wants to raise penalties for market manipulation and give regulators the ability to require more money to back up speculative trades.

Obama’s attention to oil speculation is his latest effort to focus on gasoline prices in the face of determined criticism of his energy policies by Republicans.

The average price of a gallon of gas at the pump has dropped slightly but is still higher than it was at this time last year.</blockquote>

A statistical analysis of 36 years of monthly,
inflation-adjusted gasoline prices and U.S. domestic oil production by The Associated Press shows no statistical correlation between how much oil comes out of U.S. wells and the price at the pump.

If more domestic oil drilling worked as politicians say, you’d now be paying about $2 a gallon for gasoline. Instead, you’re paying the highest prices ever for March.

Where was this outrage when zealots were pushing for prayer in tax payer funded schools?  What about when they pushed for “intelligent design” to be taught as a…  SCIENTIFIC THEORY in schools?  

Where was this support for church state separation when they added “under god” to the Pledge of Allegiance back in the 1950s?  

When two individuals wanted the same right to marry their partner the same way their counterparts do… but the religious outrage pushed and pandered and threw their bibles everything they had out to pass laws in many states to deny that right to certain individuals because… of their religious beliefs.  Where was the support for church state separation then?

Don’t bitch about separation of church and state.. and then use it when it is convenient for your argument.  Either you are for it… or you are not.

Let us rejoice in the fact that we are actually being allowed to make personal choices for ourselves. Let us rejoice even more.. that the stranglehold of the bible thumpers on our individuality and personal choice.. is coming to an end.

Thirteen metro jurisdicitions approve Sunday sales

With all results in, all 13 metro Atlanta jurisdictions that held alcohol referendums Tuesday approved lifting the Sunday package sales ban.

The biggest win for Sunday sales was in unincorporated DeKalb County, where 72 percent of voters approved. The narrowest victory was in Lovejoy, where 54 percent of voters approved, the measure passing by just 29 votes.

Other jurisdictions approving: Cobb, Forsyth, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale counties, and the cities of Austell, Buford, Conyers, Cumming, Marietta and Powder Springs.

After various start dates, stores in those areas will be permitted to sell beer, wine and liquor starting at 12:30 p.m. on
Sundays.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has been investigating claims about the public benefits of the Gwinnett Braves stadium since Gwinnett County officials unveiled the project in 2008. Although Gwinnett officials vowed the stadium would pay for itself, last September we reported the county is still struggling to find money to repay the $33 million stadium debt.

This is why developer Dan O’leary may actually be my new hero.. He has a great idea to take serious under utilized property and turn it into what we hope would be a profitable and revenue generating venture that oh.. would actually be a nice shot in the arm for the community in need of revitalization.

O’leary is planning to construct a $1 billion facility on the current OFS site within the Gwinnett Village Community Improvement District that will include a hotel tower and entertainment options including a movie theater annnnd a game floor complete with 1,000’s of video lottery machines.

O’leary expects the facility to produce as much as $350 million a year to the HOPE college scholarship in dire need of a financial booster shot.

“Our project will completely solve the HOPE problem and will help Georgia in a huge way. It can start building back up HOPE’s reserves, send more kids to college, send more kids to prekindergarten — and we can do it today,” he said.

Of course, our (sarcasm)wonderful(/sarcasm) Governor, Nathan Deal, doesn’t seem too excited about the idea.

“That’s a discussion that we have not had with the lottery board,” he said when asked about his views on video lottery terminals. “I have some concerns about it, obviously. I do not support the casino-type concept. I don’t think that is good for our state. And I’ve also said I do not support other forms of gambling that some have suggested as a revenue measure.”

He wouldn’t possibly still be pandering to his bible thumping voters would he? C’mon Guvnuh… you already won the election. Why limit revenue streams when the State you were elected to run is facing a near budget crisis every year?

Governor Deal isn’t the only hater apparently after perusing comments to Jim Galloway’s column in the AJC: A lottery-fueled gambling complex in Norcross? .

Ivory – Norcross has been on it’s way down the drain for sometime now, this would put it beyond the P trap! They should ask corrupt Detroit what gambling did for that city.

Sam the Sham – Mississippi has had gambling for years and how much did that money improve their education system???? They are STILL 50 out of 50.

Contractor – Yeah, go ahead and make it that much easier for all those sorry asses out there to go blow their welfare and unemployment checks instead of on Cash 3, Cash 4, and Fantasy 5 drawings three times a day. Go put it in Savannah or somewhere away from Atlanta where spending their livelihood is a little harder than just catching a MARTA bus to and from the casino.

Send Obama Packing – Gambling is most regressive on the poor black folks and poor white folks.

So he can make millions while he watches idiots go lose their life savings, kids education fund etc etc. Also the point about about Mississippi having gambling and still being last is a good point but also look at all the states that have gambling you will will see that they all are suffering with revenue. GAMBLING DID NOT SOLVE A DAMN THING FOR THEM! This proposal would also take monies away from the lottery as suckers only have so much money to lose. It is very simple economics.

‘In God We Trust’ stickers would be free

Anyone who wants their license plate to read “In God We Trust” would be able to do it for free under a bill passed Tuesday by the Senate.

Motorists can already buy a sticker with the motto for $1. The sticker can be placed over the usual county name decal Georgia license plates currently sport.

Under Senate Bill 293, those who want the motto can skip the charge to get it.

The call to a higher power — at least among vehicle owners — follows a minor controversy last spring. The state was forced to redo a public contest to pick a new license plate design after the Revenue Department’s website showed entries with the “In God We Trust” motto, without making clear it was not a permanent part of each design.

Sen. Bill Heath, R-Bremen, sponsored the bill. He originally proposed the motto would be the default on any license plates manufactured after July 1, but he dropped that mandate in committee.

SB 293 passed on a 48-3 vote. It now goes to the House for
consideration.

Perdue’s ‘Go Fish’ program flops in first year Associated Press

It turns out even the most conservative attendance prediction for the Go Fish Georgia Education Center in Perry was too ambitious.

The Telegraph of Macon reports (http://bit.ly/Ai1cPL) the center drew only 15,000 visitors in its first 12 months of operation. That’s far below the 100,000 tourists projected to visit when the center opened in October 2010.

The dismal turnout gives more ammunition to critics of then-Gov. Sonny Perdue, who supported spending $19 million on the center and statewide boat ramp construction during a budget crisis that included furloughs and layoffs of state employees.

Perdue pitched Go Fish as an effort to encourage fishing tourism and boost Georgia’s economy. Supporters of the center say a new marketing campaign and improved attractions could draw more
visitors.
