Idiot of the Day: Karen Handel

I have to say… I am just completely SHOCKED by this… I know.. I shouldnt be.. she’s a politician… they are all the same. But i had serious hopes.. that she would was different.. she would be different….

but alas… Karen Handel has apparently decided that she believes it is perfectly okay for one group of individuals to vote to pass laws to restrict/deny laws to another group of individuals. That was her message responding to the recent overturning of California’s (clearly unconstitutional) Prop 8 ban of same sex marriage. Her tweet today:

sick and tired of liberal judges subverting the will of the people to push their left wing agenda. legalinsurrection.blogspot.com #gapolitics

She has just shown she is as pathetic as every other politician out there. So much for being an outsider.

Now.. Im completely embarrassed that I actually defended her.

Decisions Decisions for District 2 Gwinnett

Ok District 2 Gwinnett County… What do you really want?

As I see it, you have two choices come this August 10th in the Republican primary runoff for the Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners District 2 seat… More of the same… or a potential breath of fresh air.

Now before I say anymore… let me just say this first.

I have not voted for either Lynette Howard or Keith Shewbert, nor am I voting in the runoff next week.

I am not in any way shape or form endorsing any candidate nor going to tell you who to vote for. I do not endorse candidates who are members of a party system that continues to destroy this county… much less the entire country.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way… here are my observations about the choices D2 voters have before them.

If you were at the “town hall” meet up at Norcross High School a while back where the candidates answered questions and that vote were held immediately following… there would have been a clear and absolute winner. One of them clearly showed their intelligence and intention of representing the entire district. (And let me just add.. that the clear loser – with a pathetic performance – of that meet up didn’t make the runoff.)

One has a proven track record that they are well aware that D2 exists beyond the borders of Peachtree Corners while the other seems content to stay right at home. Just check out the locations of one of the candidates “upcoming events” to see where one candidates focus will probably be were they elected. If your on the “other side of 85″… who’s showing you the love right now? Granted anything can change after someone’s elected… but are you feeling the love now?

One was an active participant in the Gwinnett Village CID, the catalyst to real change and revitalization that will make the lives for the voters of the entire district better… while the other… hmmm looking for involvement… ummm nope… don’t see anything. Not even a mention of ‘The Village’ on their campaign website.

One was appointed by and served the current D2 Commish, who focus was on bringing an unnecessary baseball stadium without voter input and that wasn’t even built in his own district and so far cost taxpayers $60+ million (and probably growing) while the other served and focused on issues and organizations within their own district.

District 2… do you really want to risk electing what could be more of the same? Or do you want what we can only hope is someone who can bring real change and dedication to our communities.

And to the District 2 voters on “the other side of 85″.. do you really want to continue to play second fiddle to Peachtree Corners?

What will it be D2 Gwinnett? Steady as she goes or full steam ahead? The choice is up to you.

Is Obama partly to blame for oil spill?

During my normal run of Sunday political talk shows, Fox News Sunday, NBC’s Meet the Press and ABCs This Week, Homeland Security Chief Janet Napolitano and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar made their rounds of what can only be seen as PR damage control.

The basic line of questioning included what happened, why didn’t the numerous fail safes work and what are they going to do to fix this mess of oil damaging the Gulf of Mexico, which is not only a crucial ecological area … but an extremely important economic one as well. An oil spill who some believe will be larger and more damaging than the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

So an interesting question was raised from numerous sources as far as who is to blame… including the question being raised “Is the Gulf Oil Spill Obama’s Hurricane Katrina?”

Naturally… most pundits said no… I disagree.

Lets compare the two… Hurricane Katrina was a natural disaster created by nature (we’ll leave the whole global warming argument out for now). Bush was extremely criticized (mostly incorrectly) for the governments lack of response to the situation. Lets keep in mind.. that for DAYS before the region was warned to get the hell out of dodge that a massive storm was headed their way.. and they didn’t do anything. Lets not forget that the Governor of Louisiana also took lil if no action other than to say “get out of dodge”. Then Katrina hit, and well so did the feces with the fan afterward. There were images of New Orleans completely under water because the levy didn’t hold, the people standing on roof tops and crowded up in the Super Dome and across the Louisiana State University campus.

Bush was essentially blamed for a delayed response to submit a rescue effort for people who refused to listen to the warnings. There was plenty of blame to go around, but how many lives could have been saved if they people had just listened?

A few years later, the Gulf Coast of Louisiana is at risk for yet another natural disaster, however, a man made disaster. Obama is not directly to blame for what happened here either. Those fingers should be pointed squarely at BP. They’re handling of the situation and evaluation of how bad it really was will be scrutinized for
generations to come. This incident will likely also slow or end the offshore drilling program. And it should while the leaders of that company and anyone who is responsible for making sure the multiple fail safes that were supposed to be in place and working should be tried and sent to jail for life. Its way too obvious that someone didn’t do their job.

Obama, and his Administration, should accept the same sort of blame that Bush had to endure post-Katrina. His lack of response. Obama should have not taken chances and engaged an all out effort to take care of this problem and not wait for a company to do so. Obama has to take a serious political hit for this as well. Fingers should be pointed and questions ask “You knew this was happening.. why didn’t you do more from the start?”

This just proves that government is largely ineffective. The government hasn’t learned anything from its own historical mistakes. Instead they keep repeating them. I am still waiting for a President to deliver on his promise of change that he so vigorously campaigned on.

Wanna satire Muhammed? Prepare to die!

I am a big fan of animation but by no means a fan of the show South Park, which airs on the cable channel Comedy Central. Of the episodes that I have seen, they can tend to push the envelope a bit with some of their story lines.. and I am not really sure anyone or any story line is safe from becoming a South Park episode. It is a free country after all, but you can’t speak ill of religion! Oh no! Not that! Afterall religion has such a great track record all by itself.

A recent episode of South Park would prove that as obvious that the shows creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, were recently issued a “warning” that they could share the same fate as the late Theo Van Gogh because of the perceived negative portrayal of the Muslim prophet Muhammad.

Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker, “was killed by a radical Islamist in 2004 after making a movie that featured a beaten, naked Muslim woman covered in writings from the Quran.”

Abu Talhah Al-Amrikee, of revolutionmuslim.com, has authored a warning which included the addressess of the South Park production company and Comedy Central. CNN contacted the author about the threats and stated:

the addresses were provided to give people the opportunity to protest rather than as a threat, according to CNN.

You issue a warning that someone could be killed for satire… and then you just give out an address for people to protest?
Riiiiiiiight. Bullshit.

The anti-”South Park” post includes audio from a sermon in which the speaker says assassination is justifiable punishment for those who defame Muhammad.

The man delivering the sermon, U.S.-born preacher Anwar al-Awlaki, is in hiding in Yemen and is on a list of al-Qaida leaders targeted for capture or assassination, according to CNN.

CNN says Al-Amrikee, the author of the post, said the al-Awlaki sermon was included in his post to remind Muslims that insulting the prophet is a severe offense for which the punishment in Islam is death.

Gwinnett Village working to revamp JCB/I-85

Looks like Gwinnett Village CID continues their good work.. and proving they are more effective than those who were elected to the Gwinnett Commission. This is a county that now has 5 CIDs to do the job the Commission SHOULD be doing. The same county that is raising our taxes while building an unnecessary $60 million baseball stadium and cut services. Yea that makes sense.

Anyway… back on topic… there are very interesting changes in store for the Jimmy Carter Blvd/I-85 and Pleasant Hill/I-85 interchanges.

I found an image for a similar project proposed in Missouri (courtesy of USA Today) that gives us somewhat of a glimpse of what JCB and Pleasant Hill might look something like:

UPDATE: Thanks to the Gwinnett Village for sharing an animation on how the diamond pattern might work. Look at the very beginning of this video:

Idiot of the Day: Bruce Benton

I reinstate my “Idiot of the Day” series for Bruce Benton and his comments about the Separation of Church and State:

Courtesy of BlueRidgeNow.com.

To The Editor: Regarding the saying aloud of a prayer at a public meeting, I would refer to the First Amendment: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech … .”

Before doing the people’s business, it seems only right and proper that those permitted to have authority over us acknowledge that our collective rights and powers do not come from government but emanate from a higher source. This should be self-evident since our rights and powers long preceded government. In this country almost uniquely, government was fashioned to protect those rights and powers.

When called upon to deliver a prayer, it is also only right and proper that the designated person employ his or her personal belief system in the construction of a statement that conveys that understanding and humility. Separation of church and state is not nor was ever intended to be regarded as separation of God and state. One could not keep God out if you wanted to regardless of what the ACLU says.

Proof Georgia Politicians dont care about Georgians.

The Texas Transportation Institute estimated that, in 2000, the 75 largest metropolitan areas experienced 3.6 billion vehicle-hours of delay, resulting in 5.7 billion U.S. gallons (21.6 billion liters) in wasted fuel and $67.5 billion in lost productivity, or about 0.7% of the nation’s GDP. It also estimated that the annual cost of congestion for each driver was approximately $1,000 in very large cities and $200 in small cities. Traffic congestion is increasing in major cities and delays are becoming more frequent in smaller cities and rural areas.

Source:

Lets take a quick review of the biggest issues facing the majority of Americans, particularly Georgians, these days:

- Economy/Jobs
- Transportation/Traffic
- Energy
- Health/Obesity
- Education

I think most people would agree with that list. I know many many Georgians do. Which is why I am totally perplexed that politician’s continue to ignore them. Transportation, especially the traffic, has been a specific thorn in the side of all Georgians.. and yet… politicians turn their nose up at it and ignore it.

Yes.. I know.. Perdue has proposed some regional tax, and I know, Karen Handel is all involved with opposing some new road project. But that is all there is.. is talk, and arguing and discussing. Nothing is getting done. Nothing is changing and with the current powers that be… I don’t think anything will ever change. Wheres the Georgia Tea Party on this issue? Even the Georgia DOT is out of money, and the ineffective Georgia Government continues to play their petty games with MARTA, and then there are the trials and tribulations of the same morons who allowed Clayton County’s C-TRAN go to ruins. Which also means that some people lost their job because they couldn’t get to work any longer.

Now, MARTA is not only looking into cutting routes and service but laying off 1,000 people because the idiots in the Gold Dome do not care about Georgians.

They went out of their way to help Georgians (potentially) lose their job because they couldn’t do the right thing.
They want people to sit in traffic and unnecessarily consume precious petroleum resources.. and everyone get fatter while we’re at it.

They have proven it over.. and over and over again.

Georgia needs a REAL transportation plan. Not new or expanded roads. But a transportation plan that makes sense. Georgia needs to converge the regional and local systems into one transit system and expand MARTA’s reach throughout Metro Atlanta and build new rail patterns that match the heaviest traffic patterns. The only way to ease traffic congestion.. is to create a system that allows people to move throughout the area more effectively. I-285 was recently identified as one of the worst in Georgia (breaking news to all of you I am sure), yet no transportation system addresses that need – including MARTA.

No one is going to use it if it doesn’t make sense. Why would someone who lives in Snellville have to travel to say 316 take the Gwinnett Express bus all the way downtown or even directly to the Doraville MARTA station .. travel south to the Lindbergh MARTA station, travel north again on another rail line.. just to get to the Perimeter Mall area. No one in their right mind would do that… thats why the current system is ineffective. Thats why MARTA ridership isn’t where it should and needs to be.

It will never happen though, because the Governor and the Gold Domer’s don’t care about you or what is really best for Georgia. They only care about their political capital.

Things you should know about AIDS.

Some interesting statistics and facts regarding AIDS from AVERT.org:

Worldwide statistics

GlobalGraph.jpg

- confidential name-based reporting of HIV diagnoses has not yet been implemented in all states
- anonymous tests, including home tests, are excluded from case reports – one in every five people living with HIV has not even had their infection diagnosed, let alone reported.

SWAT activity in my neighborhood

Some goings on in my neighborhood in Norcross, Ga. As I was pulling into my neighborhood I was greeted by a a Gwinnett PD who informed me I would not be able to go any further. That was shortly before 3pm today. Police are not releasing many details. The Gwinnett Police Dept Information Officer emailed me back with the following:

Not many details released at this point. This is Not any kind of “situation.” SWAT is on scene in Norcross to assist Uniform Officers with serving an arrest and search warrant. Nothing dramatic or interesting at this point. However, protocol dictates the street be shut down while tactical officers are active.

More updates as I have them.

UPDATE: Neighbor said a guy hiding out after an armed robbery.

6PM UPDATE: Well whatever it was its over now. Still not many details being released.

The story from the AJC

Women to blame for earthquakes.

So for you women out there reading this… let me ask you the follow questions.

Do you like to wear a bikini to the beach?
Do you like to get all dressed up in some slinky dress that shows off all kindsa curves and legs?
Do you get your hair and nails done to show off and impress?

Well… did you know, according to one Iranian cleric, that you are causing earthquakes?

Unnnnbelievable how religion continues to amaze me. Yes… an Iranian Cleric is actually blaming “promiscuous women” and women who show a lil more skin than his idiotic religion allows… for all the earthquakes. Annnd I quote:

“Many women who do not dress modestly … lead young men astray, corrupt their chastity and spread adultery in society, which (consequently) increases earthquakes,” Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi was quoted as saying by Iranian media.

Oh.. theres more.. including his solution:

What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble?” Sedighi asked during a prayer sermon Friday. “There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam’s moral codes.”

Yet people are constantly amazed when they find out I am a
non-believer. And they wonder why.
